OVERVIEW
Mark Blumberg divides the world into two types of people: trial lawyers and those who may one day need one. Since his first jury trial as a public defender decades ago, Mark has understood at the most fundamental level the anxieties of those whose lives, livelihoods, reputations, and liberty may depend on the outcome of a trial-whether they are plaintiffs or defendants, individuals or corporate representatives, witnesses or community members.
Trial lawyers serve a foundational role in society: giving voice to those who must be heard by courts and other official bodies. Clients are entitled to counsel who understand not only their legal position, but also their emotional, financial, reputational, and personal stakes. Mark learned early in his career that there are no “small cases,” only small lawyers. He has spent decades bringing that same commitment and uncommon skill to matters of national significance on the country’s biggest courtroom stages.
As Special Legal Counsel for the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division at the United States Department of Justice, Mark was responsible for investigating and prosecuting complex official and corporate conspiracies. He pioneered novel prosecutorial theories to vindicate the rights of some of the most aggrieved members of society. Piercing the veil of closed law enforcement cultures, white supremacist organizations, and corporate concealment of unlawful supply chains became a hallmark of his 30-year career, which was repeatedly recognized by the Department for outstanding service. Known for his courtroom skill, Mark also taught trial advocacy, coached trial teams from around the country, and was routinely sought out for strategic trial advice.
Beyond his trial work, Mark developed a reputation as one of the country’s premier law enforcement investigators. Trial success depends on the raw material developed in service of the client’s interests, and Mark’s ability to uncover the truth through sophisticated interviewing, meticulous preparation, and creative investigation is exceptional. He trained generations of prosecutors and federal agents in grand jury strategy, witness interviews and interrogations, and investigative methods designed to achieve the strongest possible outcomes for clients.
With deep experience in First Amendment jurisprudence, election crimes, and constitutional protections against law enforcement abuse, Mark has long combined legal judgment with practical problem-solving. He led national initiatives within the Department to address threats to democratic institutions, including attacks on election officials, threats in schools and workplaces, and systemic breakdowns in the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. As a result, Mark is equally comfortable navigating the pressures facing high-profile institutions and advocating for individuals who simply need a trial lawyer to help them be heard.
