Tax Litigation
Clients facing Internal Revenue Service (IRS) challenges have turned to Schertler & Onorato for our experience in resolving tax disputes. Our attorneys have experience in navigating the many avenues that Congress has created for resolving tax controversies. We defend clients during IRS civil audits and criminal investigations. We have litigated numerous civil and criminal tax cases in federal district courts, the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Federal Claims and the federal courts of appeals. We also litigate tax issues relating to state and local (including District of Columbia) tax controversies. Two of our attorneys, David Dickieson and Peter Taylor, gained experience in handling tax litigation as trial attorneys for the United States Department of Justice Tax Division.
In addition, we represent clients on a regular basis in administrative proceedings before the various IRS Appeals Offices. Our representation of clients in federal tax controversies has given us experience in successfully handling many complex tax issues, including taxation of foreign source income, tax accounting issues, estate tax valuation disputes, as well as resisting summons enforcement suits and defending against IRS tax collection actions. We’re a small firm with the tax litigation experience to compete with any firm in the city.
